Begin with the duty, not the port size
A 1-inch connection does not define a complete pumping duty. Two pumps with the same port size may differ in materials, diaphragm design, air distribution system and allowable service. Write down the minimum, normal and maximum demand before comparing catalog entries. Include batch-transfer time if production depends on emptying a vessel within a fixed window.
Describe the whole fluid
Record the chemical constituents and concentrations, operating and cleaning temperatures, viscosity at transfer temperature, and the size and character of any solids. Identify changes between batches. A water-based formulation may still contain solvents or abrasive fillers that affect material selection. Review housings, diaphragms, balls, seats and seals together.
Build the system picture
Document the lowest supply level, pump elevation, suction-hose length and diameter, fittings, filters, discharge elevation and downstream restrictions. A clean filter and a loaded filter represent different operating points. Include simultaneous compressed-air users, because a regulator reading with the pump stopped does not describe the supply while it is running.
Compare complete configurations
Use the curve and manual for the exact model and diaphragm arrangement. Treat maximum flow and maximum pressure as separate limits, not a single achievable operating point. Ask for a duty review if the liquid differs substantially from the curve test conditions. Evaluate access for maintenance and the availability of correct repair kits before finalizing the selection.
Create an approval record
Keep the selected model code, source documents, fluid assumptions, installation sketch and acceptance criteria together. Agree on what commissioning will measure: transfer time, actual flow, air pressure at the running pump and stable operation through the expected tank-level range. Revisit the selection when the process or cleaning chemistry changes.
